DVD - An acronym for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a form of opitical media that holds a minimum of 4.7GB (gigabytes), enough for a full-length movie. The DVD specification supports disks with capacities of from 4.7GB to 17GB and access rates of 600 KBps to 1.3 MBps. DVD uses MPEG-2 to compress video data. DVD has differnet standards, parameters in which the digital material in comprised and ordered on the media. To the consumer it means "how much information is on the disc and where". Standards are denoted by the number following the letters DVD. The most common DVD is a DVD-5, 4.7 gigs of data in one layer on one side of the disc. 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.38 computer GigaBytes where 1 kilobyte is 1024 bytes(4 700 000 000B/1024 = about 4 589 843KB/1024 = about 4485MB/1024 = about 4.38GB
